James R. "J.R." Everett Jr. departed this life on April 12, 2018. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Jean Lane Everett; his parents, James R. Everett and Mary Perry Everett; his brothers, Walter Bert Everett and James Carlton Everett; and his sisters, Leona Burton, Doris Oliver, Lillian Gardner, and Opal Hannan.

He is survived by his wife, Rhunell Nelson of Grifton; his daughter, Terry Everett Moody and husband, Robert, of Chesterfield, Va.; his son, James Eugene Everett and wife, Emily, of Cary, N.C.; his sister, Nancy Dillow of Wilmington, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

J.R. was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Greenville, N.C. He attended Farm Life School in Vanceboro, N.C., and left there to join the Army. He transferred to the U.S. Air Force, in 1948, where he retired in 1966 as a crash-crew firefighter and fire chief. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.

After his retirement, he returned to Goldsboro, N.C., where he lived and worked until health required him to move into the N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville, N.C. He worked at Heavy Duty Electric in Goldsboro for many years and then at Firestone Tire and Rubber in Wilson until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working with Troop 11 and the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts for many years, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was also an active member of the Wayne Masonic Lodge. He loved to travel, go fishing at the beach and family reunions.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke United Methodist Church, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Committal services will follow, with military honors, at Wayne Memorial Park.
