Edward Williams Jernigan Sr., 88, Goldsboro, passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Ed was born in Wayne County on June 4, 1929, to the late Sam A. Jernigan Sr. and Bessie Williams Jernigan.
He was co-founder, along with his father and brother, of Sam Jernigan and Sons Furniture Company, now Jernigan Furniture.
He loved his work and considered it a privilege to help create someone's home place by matching individual pieces of furniture to their personal tastes. Today, many homes contain quality pieces of home furnishings purchased by previous generations from "The Store." Ed was a man of personal and professional integrity whose work in the furniture industry led him to serve as president of the Goldsboro Retail Furniture Dealers Association.
He was a Free Mason and Shriner and an avid member of the Goldsboro Kiwanis. He thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship and serving the community through the Golden K's. He was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church for 60 years.
Ed graduated from Fork Union Military Academy and was educated at Campbell Junior College (Campbell University) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A service to celebrate Ed's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, in the fellowship hall of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bob Fulkerson officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service at the church. A private inurnment for the family will be at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
Ed is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Vassar Jernigan; daughter, Margaret Guthrie and husband, Mike; son, Dr. Edward W. Jernigan Jr. and wife, Dixie; brother, Sam Jernigan Jr.; grandchildren, the Rev. Jason Leonard, Matthew Leonard and wife, Joy, Miller Holmes and husband, Daniel, Dr. Edward W. Jernigan III and wife, Kelsey, Dr. John C. Jernigan (Joc), and Jordan V. Jernigan; and great-grandchildren, Anna Kate Leonard and Grace McKoy Jernigan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn J. Pickett, Blanche J. Perkinson and Ruth Jernigan; and sister-in-law, Marie Jernigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Madison Avenue Baptist Church, 300 S. Madison Ave., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
