GEORGIA PERNEICY EXUM MCCLAIN
May 22, 1939-June 18, 2017
Georgia Perneicy Exum McClain, was born May 22, 1939, in Wayne County, N.C. She departed this life June 18, 2017, at 4 a.m.
Georgia received her secondary education from Pikeville Training School in Wayne County, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.
She spent her entire career working in her chosen field of study (social services) as a social worker, and was a passionate and astute advocate for the well-being of children while working for the Department of Social Services of Baltimore, Md., and later in Wayne County, N.C.
Georgia was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Shaw, and her fundraising efforts for her alma mater over the years have been duly noted by the university.
She was the daughter of the late George Buchanan Exum and Mary Eliza Jones Exum.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. McClain, and stepmother, Sally Mae Dickerson Exum.
Georgia is survived by her only son, Milton D. McClain (Cynthia) of Wilson, N.C.; grandchildren, Donisha L. McClain of Kinston, N.C., Jamisha Raymond (William) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Milton D. McClain Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C.; one sister, Mamie P. Sutton of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Howard L. Exum of Wayne County, N.C.; sister-in-law, Johnsie McClain of Willow Springs; two brothers-in-law, Melvin McClain (Bernice) of Raleigh, N.C., and Carl Seawell of Raleigh, N.C.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Out of the utmost respect for my mother's most adamant wishes, there was no formal memorial service.
A private family gathering to spread her ashes was held at her gravesite in the historical John C. Exum I Family Cemetery located in Wayne County off N.C. 222 outside of Eureka, N.C.
The family appreciates the many condolences and well wishes expressed during this time of grief.
