SAMUEL E. TAYLOR
Died March 25, 2017Samuel Ernest Taylor, 75, lifelong resident of Mount Olive, passed away on March 25 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a period of declining health. He was the son of Marguerite and Shelton Taylor and leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Nancy Dail Taylor; daughter, Tammy Taylor Haywood and husband, Kenneth and their children, Clarke and Anna; and son, Samuel Ernest (Ernie) Taylor Jr. and wife, Mary Beth Morgan Taylor and their son, Thomas. Sam graduated from Mount Olive High School in 1960, where he played baseball and was a football high school All American. He went on to play football at the Air Force Academy prep school and attended UNC-Chapel Hill and Campbell University.
Sam was a loving husband and father, doting grandfather, trusted friend and was very proud of his children and extremely proud of his grandchildren. Sam was an avid fisherman and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He was the owner of Bird Oil Company, H&H Amoco, Carolina Cleaners and retired as a contract grower for Goldsboro Milling Company. In his earlier days, Sam was a dedicated community volunteer and served as a board member with the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce, N.C. Oil Jobbers Association, Wayne Country Day School, Wayne County Economic Development Committee, Wayne County Courthouse and Jail planning committee and Global Transpark Committee; served as president of the board for Goldsboro Country Club and Southern Wayne Country Club, chair of the Wayne County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, chair of the Wayne County Industrial Development Committee, president of the Mount Olive Industrial Committee of 100, a member of the Mount Olive Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Mount Olive Jaycees and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1969 and recipient of the Mount Olive Boys Club Volunteer of the year in 1973. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and served as secretary of the board of trustees.
The family would like to thank Toni Strickland and Lyndra Faison for their care and compassion during the past few years as well as the staff at Kitty Askins. In lieu of flowers, Sam requested that contributions be made to the schools where his grandchildren attend, Ravenscroft School, 7409 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27615 or Wayne Country Day School, 480 Wayne Country Day Road, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 or to the Kitty Askins Center, 108 Handley Park Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
Visitation will be today, from 3-5 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, and a graveside service on Monday at 11 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive. Friends and family are also being received at the residence.
