Luby Francis Bell, formerly of Mount Olive, N.C., passed away Dec. 29, 2016.

He was residing in Bracey, Va., at the time of his death.

Luby was born in Wayne County, N.C., Oct. 9, 1929, to the late Luby C. and Mary Frances Parker Bell of Mount Olive.

He played semi-pro baseball before being drafted to serve in the United States Army in the Korean War for two years. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.

Upon his return, he served in the Army National Guard for 20 years.

Luby was retired from the banking industry, and later worked for Sadler Oil Co. in Emporia, Va.

He enjoyed North Carolina State University and Duke athletics and Caroline Hurricanes hockey.

Luby was preceded in death by his sister, Jo Ann Bell; his wife, Vera Shelton-Bell; and his first wife and the mother of his children, Joy C. Bell McClure.

He is survived by his children, Cynthia B. Smith and husband, Dale, of Fayetteville, Luby F. Bell Jr. and wife, Edythe, of Greensboro, Nanci J. Bell of Bracey, Va., and Dorothy J. Bell of Chesterfield, Va.; grandchildren, Kimberly and husband, Brian, Scott and wife, Jill, Luby III "Buddy," Philip and wife, Jeanette, and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Ian, Gavin, Graham and Axel (due May 2017).

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, 1005 N. Church St., Mount Olive, N.C., with visitation to immediately follow the service.

Arrangements in Virginia were handled by Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory.
