R.D. HOWELL

Feb. 8, 1929-Nov. 27, 2016

Rufus Daniel "R.D." Howell, 87, of Pikeville, passed away early Sunday morning at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Wayne County and was the son of the late Rufus Dudley Howell and Gladys Sasser Howell. A lifelong farmer and trusted friend and neighbor, he worked from sun up to sun down, demonstrating a strong work ethic. He will be remembered by many as the collard man in Pikeville, as he grew a large amount of collards on his family farm. He also had a great love for Nascar racing.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Clark officiating. Interment will follow in the Pikeville Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Minnie Ginn Howell; son, Steven Daniel Howell and wife, Judy; grandchildren, Ryan Lynch and wife, Elizabeth, Rebecca Howell and Jordyn Howell; and great-grandchildren, Jason Lynch and Sarah Lynch. He is also survived by his K-9 buddies, Roxie and Jake.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Rufus Andy Howell; sister, Patsy Scott; and his brother, James Ransom Howell.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. James Atkins and the staff of SMOC for the care and love shown to R.D. and his family as well as to the family that helped during his decline in health: Ann Oldham, Peggy Jones and Jane Richter.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 10, Pikeville, N.C. 27863; Cures for the Colors, SMOC, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534; or 3HC, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
