DR. JEROME R. WORSLEY SR

Oct. 20, 1928-Nov. 13, 2016

Jerome was born in Pitt County, N.C., in 1928 to the late John Oscar and Mary Letha Smith Worsley.

His deceased brother was Newsome “Pete” Worsley.

He is survived by the love of his life, Frances Sasser Worsley; his sons, Stephen Jerome Worsley and wife, Virginia Worsley, from Burlington, N.C., and Jerome Roscoe Worsley Jr. and fianceé, Maria Burgos, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; and his two sisters, Nancy Lewis and Mavis Worsley.

Dr. Worsley graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business and social studies, a master’s degree in educational administration from East Carolina University and Ph.D. in business administration from North Carolina State University.

In addition, he attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the University of Colorado at Greely, Colo.

He began his career in education at Pikeville High School in Wayne County, N.C.

While teaching at Chicod School and working on his MA degree in school administration, he was a “critic teacher,” helping business education majors develop teaching skills in the East Carolina Business Education Department.

He also performed duties as principal at Eureka High School and Vanceboro Elementary School.

The majority of his vocational career of 32 years was spent at what is known as Durham Technical Community College. While there, he served as a professor, dean of adult and general education and also dean of the faculty for technical degrees and vocational educational diplomas.

He was one of the founders of the North Carolina Community College Adult Educator’s Association (NCAE), and served as its president. While teaching at Pikeville, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served as the secretary to the adjutant general of the 47TH Infantry Division.

He was transferred to (SHAPE) Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (NATO), and served as office manager for special services within Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s office staff. He was especially proud that Gen. Eisenhower invited him into his office privately, and personally presented him with a picture taken at the time, which he personally signed and presented to him for his services on his office staff and to SHAPE during the Korean War.

Jerome and Frances Worsley moved to Carillon Assisted Living in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., in 2015, where they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sept. 1, 2016. Dr. Worsley succumbed to complications from pneumonia Nov. 13, 2016.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, it was his wish that donations be made to Alzheimer’s North Carolina, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, N.C., 27609
