Evelyn Jernigan Kelly Griffin, 89, long-time Mount Olive resident, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 19, at Genesis Care Center where she and her husband have been residents for the past several years.
A God-fearing lady of the Baptist faith, she had been employed in various occupations through the years, with Southern Bell Telephone Co., United Family Insurance Co. and Belk-Tyler being among her employers.
Those preceding her in death include her first husband and the father of her girls, John Frank Kelly Jr.; a daughter, Sandra Kelly Whitman; her parents, Floyd Lee Jernigan and Mary Pearsall Jernigan Williamson; a sister, Alma J. Christiansen; and brothers, Ronald Lee Jernigan and William Craig Jernigan.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Griffin, of Genesis Center, Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Kelly Benson and Ed Benson, of Mesa, Arizona; another son-in-law, Chester "Chet" Whitman of Grantham; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Sharon Griffin Whalen and Larry Whalen, of Columbia, S.C., and Barbara Sue Griffin Benson and the Rev. Robert Benson of Shade Gap, Penn.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. The funeral will be held Friday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial following in Maplewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of one's choice.
