James Bruce Herring Jr., resident of Clinton, formerly of Mount Olive, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Sampson Regional Medical Center. He was 69.
Butch, as he was most commonly called, was a graduate of Mount Olive High School with the class of 1965, and he was also a graduate of East Carolina University.
Being the avid Pirate athletics fan that he was, he looked forward each year to the Pirate football season.
He had served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Herring Bell of Mount Olive, and two nephews, Alan Bell of Mount Olive and Robert Bell and wife, Cathy, and their son, Grayson, of Whiteville.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, James Bruce and Lucille Moye Herring, and a brother-in-law, Dennie Bell.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, and at other times, friends are welcome to Linda's home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
