John Rodney Southerland Jr., 89, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, at his home on Club Knolls Road, Dudley.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, was of the Methodist faith and had been owner/operator of Rodney's Barbecue in Mount Olive.
His survivors include his wife, Nancy Warren Southerland, of Topsail Beach; a son, John Rodney Southerland III and wife, Stephanie, of Arizona; two daughters, Leslie S. Lane of Dudley, and Wendy S. Bennett and husband, Steve of Dudley; five grandchildren, Jordan Lane, Emma Lane, Maddy Southerland, Grace Southerland and Jeffrey Southerland.
The family extends a special note of thanks to Elizabeth Canete and Community Health and Hospice for outstanding support and care.
Mr. Southerland was the son of the late John Rodney Southerland and Annie Pollock Southerland.
Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mount Olive. Presiding will be the Rev. George Futrelle and the Rev. Marti Hatch. The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home Tuesday night, Feb. 16, from 6 until 8 p.m., and at other times at 144 Quail Drive, Dudley (village of Sleepy Creek).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
