ANNIE ELIZABETH COWARD SALTER

Annie Elizabeth Coward Salter, 97, Marshallberg, N.C., died Jan. 15, 2016, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay in Sea Level, N.C.
She was born in Goldsboro, N.C., July 29, 1918, to Allen and Lula Ipock Coward.
She was valedictorian of Goldsboro High School class of 1935, and continued her education at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., graduating in 1939 with degrees in English and history.
In later years, she received her state certification in library science from East Carolina University.
In the fall of 1939, she moved to Carteret County, where she began her 32-year teaching career in high schools at Smyrna, Beaufort and East Carteret.
In 1942 she married Richard "Lionel" Salter of Marshallberg. They remained happily married until his death in 1987.
She became a member of Marshallberg Baptist Church in 1942, and served there as organist and pianist for 41 years.
Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Salter was an active member of North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Retired Teachers' division of AARP and Carteret County Retired School Personnel.
In 2009, she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state's highest civilian award, presented to individuals with a proven record of extraordinary service to North Carolina.
In 2010, she became a 50-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society for women educators.
Her other memberships included Friends of Fort Macon, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Marshallberg Community Club and Carteret County Historical Society. Mrs. Salter also served as docent at The History Place for many years.
She is survived daughters, Carolyn S. Mason of Bettie, N.C., and Barbara S. Gates of Fayetteville, N.C.; granddaughter, Katie Mason Pearsall of Otway, N.C.; grandsons, Cameron and Ryan Gates of Fayetteville, N.C.; great-granddaughters, Hailey and Lilly Pearsall of Otway, N.C.; sisters, Melrose C. Lomax and husband, Roy, of Elizabethtown, N.C., Margaret C. Jennette and husband Herm, of Swansboro, N.C. and Lucille C. Meachen and husband, Jim, of Goldsboro, N.C., and brothers-in-law, Charles Riggs of Fort Thomas, Ky., and Carl Raley of Evansville, Ind.
She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews as well.
Mrs. Salter was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Lionel" Salter, and sisters, Evelyn Frances C. Riggs and Susie C. Raley.
Munden Funeral Home and Crematory of Morehead City will handle final arrangements.
Visitation will be held at Marshallberg Baptist Church Monday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The funeral will be held following visitation at 2 p.m. Internment will be at Victoria Cemetery in Marshallberg immediately following the service.
