HAROLD L. SMITH
March 14, 1935-June 20, 2015
Harold Lloyd Smith, 80, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away Saturday night, June 20, 2015, while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
He had been in declining health for the past several months.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday night, June 24, at 7 at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Rose officiating.
The visitation will immediately follow the service.
At other times, the family may gather at the home of Edna and Austin House, 874 N.C. 403 West, Mount Olive.
Committal and burial will be Thursday, June 25, at 10 a.m. at the Smith family cemetery on Adams Road, Seven Springs.
Harold was the son of the late Harvey Allen and Frankie Williamson Smith.
He retired from the United States Army in 1976 with the rank of staff sergeant after having served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars in the 101st Airborne Division, Company I, 506 Infantry.
During his war service tenure, he was stationed in Germany, Italy and the Philippines, and after the war, he was at Fort Sill at Lawton, Okla. While there, he attended Cameron University, receiving an associate degree in agriculture.
In later years, he attended Wayne Community College, where he obtained an appliance repair certification.
In his spare time, he enjoyed repairing clocks, and he will be remembered for being an avid UNC Tar-Heel fan.
Harold is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Donald A. and Justeen K. Smith of Mount Olive; a sister and brother-in-law, Edna S. and Austin House, of Mount Olive; another sister-in-law, Betty Smith of Goldsboro; many nieces and nephews including Timmy Smith, Horace Smith, James Allen Smith, John Smith, Cameron Smith, Ricky Smith, Keith Smith, Jimmy Smith, Austin House Jr., Mary Frances Kennedy, Patricia Brewer, Carolyn Powell, Kaye Wise, LaDonna Martin, Darlene Carter, Sharon Lee and Pam Lindsay; many great-nieces and great-nephews; special long-time friends, Michael and Nancy Jones and family, of Kentucky; and his special pet puppy, Gismo.
In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Pauline Smith, Robert and Mable Smith, John R. and Ruth Smith and Bill Smith; a niece, Shelby Brock; and nephews, Morris Smith and Robert E. Smith.
The family wishes to thank Renee Pope and Dorothy Lane for their efforts in providing care and companionship to him during the last few months and also to the Kitty Askins staff for making his final days more comfortable.
