Dolly Thornton Smith, 67, passed away peacefully in the quiet comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family with her favorite old country music playing in the background.
Dolly was born in the Grantham community Nov. 30, 1947, the daughter of the late Ruby and Edgar Lee Thornton.
A memorial service in celebration of Dolly's life will be held Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating.
The family will visit with friends immediately after the service.
Dolly graduated from the Johnston Community College nursing program in 1975.
Her nursing career of 22 years included working as a surgical scrub nurse and pediatric nurse, and she spent many years working at Dr. Drummond's office in Grantham.
She was a dedicated, compassionate nurse, and loved taking care of people.
Our Mama lived life with a deep sense of wonder, always full of light and love. She loved her family, her cozy house in the woods, her flowers, spending days at the beach, playing long games of scrabble, the yearly Thornton Sisters retreat, family gatherings, laughter, music, books, a good cup of coffee, chocolate cake and lots of ice cream.
Dolly is survived by her husband, Charles Eugene Smith; their five children, Susan Coats Price (David) of Mount Olive, Ryan Smith (April) of Dudley, Joshua Smith (Tiah) of Wilmington, Shane Smith (Kimberly) of Williamsburg, Va., and Michele Coats Graham (Joey) of Dudley; her grandchildren, Graham (Ashley) and Heather Price, Kirkland, Sarah Catherine, Claire and John Thomas Smith, Justin (Rebecca) and Wesley Graham and Luke and Jaxon Smith; and two great grandchildren, Cora Price and James Graham.
She is also survived by her three brothers and six sisters, Kenneth Thornton (Dianne), Keith Thornton (Denise) and Gene Thornton all of the Grantham community, Dora King of Wendell, Betty Williams of Muont Olive, Faye McCullen (M.F.) of Mount Olive; Ann Cox of Goldsboro, Mary Ellen Best of Mount Olive and Billie Turlington (Jack) of Goldsboro.
Also surviving are lots of special cousins, nieces and nephews.
We would like to say thanks to the wonderful caretakers who took such good care of Mama. Thanks Gena, Pat, Mrs. Rachel, Jared and Keri.
We also offer deep thanks and gratitude to 3HC Hospice Care.
Flower memorials are welcome or contributions to a charity of your choice, or simply honor our Mama by planting some beautiful spring flowers, picking up a book and reading to a child or taking a long walk on the beach.
