JOYCE J. HARRELL

Mrs. Joyce Johnson Harrell, 74, Snow Hill, died Sunday evening, Dec. 21, 2014.

A native of Greene County, she was born Jan. 5, 1940, the daughter of Walter and Annie Ham Johnson.

Following graduation from the Snow Hill High School, where she was star basketball player, she married her high school sweetheart, Tommy Harrell, who preceded her in death in 2002.

In 1983, Joyce was appointed Clerk of Superior Court of Greene County, and subsequently was elected to the office in 1986 in a landslide election.

Upon her retirement in 2001, Joyce had served the citizens of Greene County for four terms, running unopposed in all elections following 1986.

A lady of strong resolve and character, she had a deep faith in her Lord and savior. She was a member of Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a very active part of its services and Sunday School.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce was preceded in death by her only brother, Jimmy L. Johnson, earlier this year.

Her surviving family includes her daughter, Cindy Harrell Beaman and husband, Frankie; her grandchildren, Matt Beaman and wife, Lindsey, and Kristin Beaman; a great-grandson, Thomas Beaman; and sisters, Peggy J. Bartlett and husband, Kenneth, and Mavis J. VanRoekel and husband, Johnnie.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, Dec. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service.

Graveside services will be held privately.
