BILLIE JEAN VAUGN MCDONOUGH

Died July 18, 2014

Billie Jean Vaughn McDonough, 36, peacefully departed this life on July 18, 2014, in her home, surrounded by her family, after a 10-month battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cherishing her memory and keeping her legacy alive are her husband, Jason; children, Dylan, Jessica, Justin and Brittany; father, Bill Vaughn; mother, Eleanor Vaughn; sister, Vickie Jackson; brothers, Al and Mark Saucier and Murphy Vaughn; and a stepbrother, Joseph Stuckey. She is also survived by two step-granddaughters, six nephews and four nieces, and especially proud of her nephew, Anthony Jackson, for his military service and continuing education. Billie was preceded in death by her sister, Wendy Saucier, and brother, "Little" Bill Vaughn.

Billie Jean was born and raised in Goldsboro, N.C. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from East Carolina University and worked in a variety of nursing fields while earning her degrees. Billie's passion was her work in hospice, for which she received her National Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse Certification in 2012.

Billie was a tireless advocate, leader and director of patient care services for Brunswick County and SECU Hospice House and their respective teams. Billie took great pride in being a part of bringing a hospice care center to Brunswick County, and was highly regarding by her colleagues and employees for her knowledge and enthusiasm in providing care for patients and families facing critical illness.

When not in the office, Billie could be found at the beach, fully enjoying the "salt life" with her family and friends. With a cold drink in hand, and a smile a mile wide, Billie would be seen enjoying the fresh air in her hair, the warm sand on her toes and the bright sun on her face.

Billie had a substantial impact on all those whom she met. Her infectious smile, happy-go-lucky personality and friendly presence would brighten anyone's day. Billie's unconditional love, support and encouragement touched many and will forever live on in the hearts of her family, friends and colleagues.

A graveside service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park North in Goldsboro, N.C., at 4 p.m. on July 22. If you are unable to attend, Billie would love for you to take a moment out of your day to sit by the ocean and to enjoy the salty air, warm sand and cool ocean waters.

There will be a celebration of life on July 27 at 2 p.m. at North Brunswick Fellowship, 205 Old Fayetteville Road, Leland, N.C., 28451.

Billie's family would like to thank her care teams in Chapel Hill and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for providing compassionate, thorough care and for allowing Billie to spend time with her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Billie's work are suggested to be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, N.C., 28422, or to an educational fund for her son Dylan.
