MERLE S. LEWIS
Feb. 16, 1931-July 15, 2014
Merle Summerlin Lewis, 83, a resident of Mount Olive, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 15, at Wayne Hospital, after battling Sjogren's syndrome for more than 30 years.
A native of the Summerlin's Crossroads area of Duplin, she had been a nurse in the practice of Dr. Warren Crumpler of Mount Olive, and subsequently worked at National Spinning Co. and Burlington Industries.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mount Olive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Lawton Summerlin and Kate Agnes Williams Summerlin, and was the sister of the late Liston D. Summerlin.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Merle Lewis of Faison; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawton Herbert Lewis and Mary Anita Lewis of Beulaville; a grandson, Bryan Lawton Lewis and wife, Sara, of Tampa, Fla.; and three nieces.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with pastor Doug Bartlett and pastor Jeff Dail officiating. Burial will follow at Summerlin Family Cemetery at Summerlin's Crossroads.
Visitation will be at Tyndall during the hour before the service.
