THELMA L. KORNEGAY

ALBERTSON --Thelma Lee Kornegay, 95, lifelong resident of the Pleasant Grove community, after having lived a long and fruitful life of love, hard work, loyalty and devotion to God, her family and neighbors, was ushered into the presence of the Almighty God on Thursday, July 3, 2014 while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, following a five-day illness.
"Miss Thelma" as she was known throughout the neighborhood, was the daughter of the late Ransom and Blanche Smith Kornegay. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women and a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary of the Duplin County Camp. She had been a member of the Scott's Store Home Demonstration Club and was a vital part of the Pleasant Grove community.
She was married to Carl W. Kornegay, who died in 2001. They had two children, Judith Kornegay Herring, known as Judi, and her husband, Carlyle, and Carl W. Kornegay Jr. , known as Carlie, and his wife, Linda. Also surviving are a sister, Mary Kornegay Dickson of Morehead City; four grandchildren, Leland Herring and wife, Melissa, and Leigh Herring Soles and husband, Tate, of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Karla Kornegay Grady and husband, Doug, and Larry W. Kornegay and wife, Hope, of Mount Olive; 10 great-grandchildren, William Herring, Tyneisha Herring, London Soles, Isabel Soles, Ransom Soles, Evan Brock, Jenna Shae Grady, Logan Kornegay, Griffen-Jase Kornegay and Karley McKay Kornegay; several nieces and nephews from both sides of the family; her church family, and her community of friends and neighbors who loved her very much.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Milton "Bud" Kornegay; and two sisters, Florence Kornegay Jernigan Ferrell and Bertha Moye Kornegay.
Services to celebrate the wonderful life that she lived are set for 5 p.m. today at Woodland United Methodist Church, Albertson, N.C., with the Reverends Gina Barrow, Linda Grider and Leland Heath Jr. officiating, followed by visitation. She will be laid to rest on Monday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Pink Hill, following an 11 a.m. committal service, led by the Rev. Lynwood Boyette.
Friends, family and neighbors are being warmly welcomed and received at the Kornegay residence, 919 Woodland Church Road, Albertson.
In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Mrs. Kornegay's desire to help others, she has requested that memorial gifts be made to Gideon's International Duplin County Camp, P.O. Box 572, Wallace, N.C. 28466, or Woodland United Methodist Church, c/o Janet Huggins, 410 Panther Creek Road, Pink Hill, N.C. 28572.
Arrangements are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Home.
