DUDLEY -- Frederick Carroll (Fred) Williams, 75, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, surrounded by family at his home in Dudley.
A kind and loving husband, father, brother and friend, Mr. Williams was born in Wayne County on Dec. 17, 1938, to the late Fred Williams and Gertrude Cobb and was raised in Andrews, N.C. He served his country in the USAF, performing aircraft maintenance for four years and then began work as a mechanic at General Electric in Goldsboro, where he remained for 36 years.
As a lover of the outdoors, Mr. Williams spent many hours and days hunting and fishing in and around Wayne County, as well as maintaining a thriving backyard garden. He was a member of the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and served two terms as president of the GE TOM club. Mr. Williams was also a collector and antique enthusiast, enjoying his retirement by entering his favorite items in the Wayne County Fair and attending meetings of the Wayne County Coin Club. He also loved to travel, spending many weeks taking his grandchildren to his favorite destinations, the Great Smoky Mountains and Williamsburg, Va.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Barbara Williams of the home; a brother, Joe (J.D.) Williams of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister, Sarah Tidwell and husband, Richard of Raleigh; three children, Carroll Williams of Goldsboro, Teresa Boone and husband, Jerry Wayne of New Bern and Vince Williams and wife, Traycee of Goldsboro. He also leaves behind three stepchildren, Raymond Hinson of Pikeville, David Hinson and wife, Angie of Goldsboro and Thomas Hinson of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, A.C. Dail and wife, Etta of Kinston; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a special friend of the family, Rita Bass; several nieces and nephews and his two faithful companions, Buttons and Kelly.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Hildred Williams of Knoxville, Tenn.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro with Pastor Calvin Craft officiating. Entombment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Dudley. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the building fund for Pinkney Baptist Church.
