EDWARD LEE JERNIGAN

Mr. Edward Lee Jernigan, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
Mr. Jernigan was born in Wayne County Sept. 19, 1924, to the late Alec and Sallie Capps Jernigan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Eudelle Sasser Jernigan.
Ed was a native of Grantham, and graduated from Grantham High School.
At 17, he left to work in Baltimore.
He returned to North Carolina, and soon joined the Army Air Corps. (Air Force). Ed proudly served his country during World War II in England as a mechanic on B17s.
After the war, he returned to Goldsboro and soon met the love of his life, Eudelle Sasser of Nahunta.
Ed began working with Carolina Power and Light (CP&L), and soon transferred to Mount Olive as service representative. He retired in Dunn as a senior lineman with a total of 40 years.
Mr. Jernigan was very active in the Mount Olive community, where he was a member of Mount Olive First Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, usher and on many committees.
Ed was charter president of the Mount Olive Lions Club.
He was also a member of the Mount Olive Fire Department, and held the status of the oldest retired member.
When Mr. Jernigan moved to Dunn, he was a member of Dunn First Baptist Church, and served as a deacon and usher.
While in Dunn, he started his business named "Ed's Used Cars."
Upon retiring, he and his wife, Eudelle, decided to return to Goldsboro as they would be near family and old friends.
They became members of Goldsboro First Baptist Church.
In his later years, Mr. Jernigan enjoyed surf fishing at Emerald Isle. He enjoyed riding his Ford Explorer down the beach to the pointe at Emerald Isle and Black Skimmer Road.
Ed will be best remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend.
Mr. Jernigan is survived by his daughter, Joan Jernigan, and his granddaughter, Dr. Amanda J. Wynn.
He is also survived by three sisters, Jean Godbold of Clinton, Susie Williams of Newton Grove and Alice Berigtold of Maryland, as well as a brother, Jerry Jernigan of Florida.
In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ola Mae Bryan, Lucille Lammers and Polly Kennedy, as well as three brothers, James, Billy and Ray.
Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Jernigan to First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, as well as Kitty Askins Hopsice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at noon in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
