CHAPEL HILL -- Mary Evelyn Cooke Howell, 85, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Chapel Hill.
Evelyn was born in Wayne County Sept. 10, 1928, to the late Ernest K. and Mary Daveler Cooke. She was married to the late Eugene S. Howell.
Evelyn retired from her work with Clinard's, and was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Terry Howell Gunnels of Chapel Hill and Sheryl Howell Williams of Beaufort; sister, Ila Gray Cooke Smith; brother, William Ernest "Billy" Cooke; and grandchildren, Amanda Christine Gunnels, Christopher Rawlings Gunnels and Kevin Alexander Gunnels.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Cooke Hinnant, and brothers, Alton Ernest Cooke, Robert Rudolph Cooke and Morris Henderson Cooke.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to the University of North Carolina Hospice, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, N.C., 27312.
