ANN HATCHER 'LOLA' BARNES

Mrs. Ann Hatcher Barnes "Lola," the daughter of the late Preston and Mary Greenfield Hatcher, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She entered her eternal rest at Kitty Askins July 8, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Preston and Mary Greenfield Hatcher; her brothers, Charles, Larry and David Hatcher; her youngest daughter, Wanda Elaine Smith; and baby boy Smith.

She was the third oldest of eight children.

She entered into holy matrimony to Johnnie V. Barnes. Together they raised four children, Mattie, Hogan, Dwaine and Kerry "Guy" Smith.

She was a member of Greenleaf Church in Goldsboro, N.C.

Ann was very outgoing and friendly, and willing to help others.

She loved to read and travel, and admired and acquired beautiful things, which she lovingly used to make a warm and beautiful home.

She loved the Lord and lived it every day. She beamed with excitement and laughter and love at the sight of her grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend.

She complete her education in the Wayne County School System, and graduated from Carver High School.

She attended nursing school at Kings County Hospital in New York, where she received her LPN degree. She obtained an associate degree in sociology from Wayne Community College and a bachelor's degree from East Carolina University.

She was employed with AT&T in New York as a switch operator.

Because of her excellent verbal skills, she was chosen by the United States government during the Cuban Missile Crisis to man communication stations that listened for any signal of nuclear attack on the United States.

She also worked at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro and Elwin Institute in Philadelphia, Pa.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted husband, Johnnie V. Barnes of the home; a daughter, Madeline McBride (Cliff) of Seattle, Wash.; three sons, Hogan Smith of Newark, Del., Dwaine Smith (Michelle) of Harvest, Ala., and Kerry Guy Smith (Shamauer) of Dudley; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Desi, Peter, Adam, Andrew, Brandon, Dasia, Yamena, TyQ "Vincent," Matthew, Kelon and Genesis; a great-grandchild, Jeremiah; two sisters, Sara Mack (Abraham) and Muriel Mereday; three brothers, Johnnie, Preston and Marvin Hatcher; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Homegoing celebration will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greenleaf Christian Church, 2110 N. William St., Goldsboro, with apostle Dennis Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow in Greenfield-Hatcher Family Cemetery in Dudley.

Viewing will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home chapel. The family will be present from 6 to 7 p.m. to receive friends and at other times at the residence.
