JAMES L. GATLIN III
June 20, 1935-April 12, 2013
James Leonard Gatlin III, 77, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013, at Sampson Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
James was born in Atlanta, Ga., on June 20, 1935, to the late James L. Gatlin Jr. and Lolita Johnson. James retired as a Senior Master Sgt. from the United States Air Force, where he worked as a munitions maintenance specialist and served in the Vietnam War. James later worked as a communications dispatcher for the Goldsboro Police Department.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Sasser officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors.
James is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Addie Vandiford Gatlin; his sons, James "Rip" Leonard Gatlin IV and wife, Ginger, of Smithfield, Gary Paul Gatlin and wife, Pam, of Goldsboro, Kenneth Matthew Gatlin and wife, Kim, of Rockingham; grandchildren, Sarah Gatlin, Tyler Gatlin, James "JL" Leonard Gatlin V and Michael Broadwater; his brother, Richard Lamar Gatlin and wife, Rita, of Fort Defiance, Va.; sister-in-law, Margaret W. Gatlin; and brother-in-law, Wayne Butler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Claude Gatlin; and a sister, Virginia Ann Butler.
The family will receive friends Sunday, April 14, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the home at other times.
