SEVEN SPRINGS -- Kenneth Marshall Singleton, 66, Seven Springs, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Kenneth was born Dec. 7, 1946, in Wayne County to the late Kirby Steve Singleton and Lola Mae Gurley Singleton.

Kenneth excelled as a student, and graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in operations engineering.

Kenneth began his working career as a store manager with Kroger, and later owned and operated Singleton's Blue Ribbon.

For many years, Kenneth drove an oil truck with Mooring Oil Co. and later Clyde Wade Oil Co. Kenneth last worked in emergency management, and took great pride in being able to help others following storms and disasters.

He loved the outdoors and nature. Kenneth's love of nature led him to volunteer with the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation. He embraced the Native American culture, and enjoyed collecting arrowheads/artifacts.

Kenneth was an avid reader and lover of music. He especially enjoyed reading non-fiction and listening to Emmy Lou Harris.

Kenneth loved to cook, and enjoyed photography, camping and canoeing. He enjoyed people, and loved good fellowship with family and friends.

A highlight of Kenneth's year was the annual Friends Reunion.

He enjoyed following North Carolina State basketball and NASCAR.

Kenneth was a member of LaGrange First Free Will Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Kenneth's life will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ronnie Hobgood and the Rev. Chris Singleton officiating.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Susan Rice Singleton; two daughters, Stephanie Singleton Walker and husband, Chip, of St. Louis, Mo., and Heather Rae Singleton and husband, Steve Baker, of Newport; three grandchildren, Thornton Walker, Emmi Walker and Jahcelyn Grady; two sisters, Shirley Sorrell and husband, Vernon, of LaGrange and Ann Kennedy and husband, Ronald, of Pink Hill; along with a niece and three nephews, Vicki Lemmond, Greg Sorrell, Ashley Holland and Chad Holland.

The family will receive friends Saturday following the service, and at other times will be at the home.
