JAMES S. "SONNY" RIGGS JR.
March 18, 1940-March 18, 2013
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Sonny passed away Monday on his birthday at Eisenhower Medical Center.
He was born in Goldsboro, the son of the late James S. Riggs Sr. and Lyndal C. Riggs.
He graduated from Goldsboro High School, enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Army for 26 years, in Atlanta, Ga., Whiteville, N.C., Jacksonville, N.C., San Francisco, Calif., San Antonio, Texas, and Vietnam.
He made his home in North Augusta for 23 years.
He was very active in his church, and also in many veteran organizations. He was a very loving husband, father and friend to so many. He enjoyed his yard, gardening and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Dot of 33 years, and two daughters, Lyn Riggs of Wendell, N.C., and Julie Riggs Woodring and husband, Ricky, of Princeton.
He is also survived by four stepdaughters, Sharon Riggs Staub and husband, James, of Augusta, Ga., Barbra Riggs Gallaway and husband, Ken, of Arcadia, Fla., Vicki Riggs Lamar and husband, Kip, of Martinez, Ga., and Cindy Williams and husband, Gerry, of Edgefield, S.C.; stepson, Mike Bates and wife, Carla, of North Augusta; two sisters, Linda Riggs Radford and husband, Bruce, of Goldsboro and Carol Riggs Jessup of Greensboro; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four very special cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Vernon "Dicky" Riggs, and brother-in-law, Aubrey Jessup.
The family will receive friends at Posey Funeral Home in North Augusta Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Sweetwater Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Friday. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens with full military honors.
