DOROTHY SHEPHERD HILLIARD

ELON -- Mrs. Dorothy Shepherd Hilliard, 87, died Monday, March 18, 2013.
Mrs. Hilliard was born in Durham, and was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Dora Perry Shepherd.
She majored in voice at Elon College, where she met her husband, Charles A. Hilliard.
She had a weekly radio show in Durham, and was the soloist for the choir at Elon College.
Known affectionately to her students as "Mrs. Honey," she taught music in Durham City Schools for 17 years.
She was president of her ADK teacher's sorority and a former Teacher of the Year.
She directed the choir, and sang at Congregational Christian Church, and later joined Duke Memorial Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on the altar guild.
She is survived by her husband, Charles "Al" Hilliard now of Elon; two daughters, Kathy Hilliard Lies and her husband, Steve, of Goldsboro and Dody Hilliard Denault and her husband, Rich, of Elon; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Windy Lies Lampson and her husband, Jeff, and their son, Noah Stephen, Hillary Lies Messer and her daughter, Hayley Noelle, Katy Denault and Patty Denault.
A service will be held at Duke Memorial Methodist Church in Durham Saturday, March 23, 2012, at 11 a.m.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell County.
