ROBERT WILLIAM ADAIR SR.

Robert William Adair Sr., 92, born Jan. 20, 1920, in Amherst, Mass., to William and Ada (Cupitt) Adair, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, in his sleep at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
A graduate of Northampton Smith School in the field of carpentry in 1937, he spent many years managing a Purina Grain store, and later worked for Amherst Farmers Supply before becoming a full-time fireman for Amherst Fire Department.
Retiring after 27 years of service, he became a bus driver for the Amherst school system, driving for 12 years, while being the caretaker for South Amherst Library, Amherst South Congregational Church and South Amherst Cemetery.
He also ran the Amherst dog pound.
Robert was married to now deceased Hilda (Ives) Adair for 47 years, and had three children, Judi (Cecil) Thomas of Mount Dora, Fla., Elizabeth (Richard) Galaska of Celebration, Fla., and Robert William Jr. (Susan) Adair of Amherst, Mass.
In 1991, he married Marion C. (Atkins-Mongue) Adair, and leaves behind his stepchildren, Chandler Atkins of Queensbury, N.Y., Elizabeth Vega of Goldsboro, Dr. James (Sherry) Atkins of Goldsboro, Linda (Floyd) Thompson of Warrenton, Va., and Holly (Charles) Pelissier of Pleasanton, Calif.
In addition, Robert leaves behind seven grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
For 15 years Bob and Marion spent winters in Marco Island and Naples Fla., and summers in Conway, Mass., before moving to Goldsboro.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or the American Cancer Society in his name.
