BETTY LAUN TILLEY

Dec. 11, 1925-July 13, 2012

KINSTON -- Betty Laun Tilley of Pikeville passed away at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro surrounded by her family at the age of 86.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston with funeral services beginning immediately after visitation. The Rev. Willis Pearson will officiate. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

She cherished her childhood years in Nebraska and her married life in Kinston, having lived in Pikeville for the last few years with her oldest daughter and her husband due to declining health. Alzheimer's robbed her of many things valuable to her but not her pleasant disposition. It remained a pleasure for her family to visit with her up until the time of her death.

Betty was the daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Laun, being born Dec. 11, 1925. She had two sisters, Emily and Ann, who predeceased her. She was married to William Edgar Tilley who passed away in 1991. Together they had four daughters who were raised in a Christian home. Survivors include Patsy and Ed Waters of Pikeville, Sandra and Al Kea of Nashville, Gayle and Bobby Bell of Wilmington, and Wanda and James Howard of Snow Hill. Grandchildren include DeAnna Sullivan of Zebulon, Allison Russell of Graham, Anthony and Justin Howard of Snow Hill, Brian Howard of LaGrange, James Bell and Sarah Bell of Wilmington. Five great-grandchildren are also left as survivors.

After Betty finished her working career, she volunteered for her church, First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Kinston, and as a pink lady at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston until such time as she was no longer able.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534; to First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 711 Phillips Road, Kinston, NC 28504; or to the Alzheimer's Association North Carolina, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27609.

The family would like to thank the staff on Station Four of the Willow Creek Nursing Home and the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice for their kindness and care during her stay there.
