NONA MAYO HOOKS

FREMONT -- Nona Mayo Hooks, 88, passed peacefully Sunday morning, July 1, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by her family.

A quiet woman and beloved mother, Mrs. Hooks enjoyed reading and time spent with family. She lived in the Mayo home place where she was born until, amid failing health, she became a resident of Country Side Assisted Living in Pikeville, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home with Rudy West officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Mayo-Hooks family plot at Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont, N.C.

Mrs. Hooks was born in Fremont to the late Fred Becton and Nona Johnson Mayo. Mrs. Hooks was a graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh and Hardbarger Business School. She worked for the government in Washington, D.C. After moving back home to Fremont, she worked in insurance and was the secretary of Fremont School until her retirement.

Mrs. Hooks is survived by a son, Mike Hooks and wife, Cathie, of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Michael Hooks, Jr. and wife, Leigh, of Goldsboro; Jon Hooks and wife, Jenny, of Cary; Ericka Simmons and husband, Josh, of Wilson; and Christina Copersito and husband, Joey, of Apex; two great-grandsons, Ryan Michael Hooks and Colton Simmons; two sisters-in-law, Treva Hooks Barbour of Nashville and Sarah Hooks Massaro and husband, Fred, of California, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hooks was preceded in death by her husband, C. Wayne Hooks Sr., her son, Curtis Wayne Hooks Jr., three brothers, Fred B. Mayo Jr., John B. Mayo, and Charles L. Mayo, and two sisters, Janet M. Pearsall and Marjorie M. Carroll.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Fremont United Methodist Church, 106 N. Sycamore St., Fremont, N.C. 27830.
