James W. "Jimmy" Thompson Sr., 81, died peacefully Monday, March 12, 2012, surrounded by his family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Jimmy was born in Wayne County Feb. 24, 1931, to the late Leslie B. Thompson and Mallie Edwards Thompson.
He was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men's Club.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Vann Spivey officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Forest United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Ellis Thompson; his son, Jimmy Thompson Jr. and friend, Bea, of Raleigh; daughters, Nanette T. Aycock and husband, Phillip, of Fremont and Judy T. Smith and husband, Elton, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Phil Aycock and wife, Veronica, James Ryan Aycock and wife, Amanda, Nancy Carroll Aycock, Zachary Smith, Paula Cooper and Vanessa Thompson; and several great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Leslie E. "Red" Thompson of Goldsboro; sister, Helen T. Thompson of LaGrange; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie T. Overman of Wallace, and a grandson, Charles William Aycock.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall Wednesday, March 14, 2012, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence.
