Mrs. Brenda Townsend Marshall, 62, lovingly known by her family and friends as "Brenda Joyce," 111 Adler Lane, Goldsboro, N.C., retired from her earthly assignments Friday, July 8, 2011, at her residence.
"Brenda Joyce" was born March 14, 1949, to the late Harry Lee Townsend Sr. and the living Helen Mitchell.
During her youth, Brenda joined Greenleaf Christian Church, and later in life she served as a youth counselor, Girl Scout leader, Brownie Scout leader and a junior usher board leader.
She attended Dillard High School and Goldsboro High School, where Brenda graduated in 1967.
After high school, Brenda furthered her education by attending North Carolina Central University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.
Being a scholar, she traveled back to North Carolina Central University, where Brenda earned her master's degree in 2010.
Brenda's professional affiliations include serving as president of the local Wayne County Alumni Chapter for North Carolina Central University, a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma, a member of NAACP and a host of other professional organizations.
In 1978, Brenda met, dated and married Leon Marshall Sr., and their union of marriage totaled 33 loving years together.
She founded and operated Tranquility Counseling Service as LCSW.
Funeral service will be conducted Thursday, July 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Greenleaf Christian Disciples Of Christ Church, 2110 N. William St., Goldsboro, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery South, 2925 U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C.
A public viewing will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at McIntyre Funeral Home and Florist, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., from 2 to 6 p.m.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband of 33 years, Leon Marshall Sr.; two daughters, Kimberley Johnson and husband, James, and Leonese Marshall all of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Leon Marshall Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C., Harold Alston of Dudley, N.C., and Dominique Townsend of the home; her mother, Helen M. Townsend of Goldsboro, N.C.; three brothers, Harry L. Townsend Jr. and wife, Veda, Tony Townsend and wife, Cynthia, and Cherry Townsend all of Goldsboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Harry L. Townsend Sr., and her sister, Katherine Townsend.
At other times, the family will receive friends and other family members at 111 Adler Lane, Goldsboro, N.C., where family and friends will also assemble one hour prior to the funeral in preparation for the funeral procession.
