FREMONT -- Retired police chief W.T. Kilpatrick, 90, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 14, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, in Fremont. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral beginning at 1 p.m.

Mr. Kilpatrick was born in Wayne County Jan. 1, 1921, to the late Tom and Winnie Summerlin Kilpatrick.

He enjoyed a lifetime career in public service as a policeman in Goldsboro, and later as chief of police in Fremont for 20 years.

His retirement years were filled with the love of his garden, pecan trees, the time shared with his grandsons, his daughter-in-law's meals and time hunting with his son.

He is survived by his son, Roger and wife, Carleen, of Greensboro, and three grandchildren, Matthew Thomas, Michael Allen and Betsy Lynn Carr and husband, Brian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Hill Kilpatrick, and a daughter, Janice Faye Kilpatrick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in W.T.'s memory to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 930-A Wellness Drive, Greenville, N.C., 27834.
