HELEN H. COX
March 6, 1930-Feb. 25, 2011
Helen Hood Cox, 80, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family. Her strength, courage, and optimism were evident throughout her 21 year battle with cancer.
A service to honor Helen's life will be held today, Feb. 27, 2011, at 6 p.m., at the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Patrick Muston officiating. The family will receive friends following the service, and at other times at the home of Keith and Beverly Westbrook.
Helen was raised on a dairy farm in Grantham by her parents, Durwood and Eloise Hood. She attended Hardbargers Business College in Raleigh. After the loss of her husband of 40 years, she moved to Atlantic Beach where she shared her joy of fishing, and "the beach life" with her family and friends. One of her favorite pastimes was playing the game of BINGO. After feeling the need to be closer to her family, she returned to Grantham.
She was a volunteer in the day surgery department at Wayne Memorial Hospital for 13 years. She had a very special relationship with this wonderful group, who she referred to as her second family.
Mrs. Cox is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karen Cox; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Keith Westbrook; a brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Molly Hood; her beloved grandchildren, Amanda Cox, Fred Cox, and wife, Christy, Jamie Cox, Charlie Westbrook, and Jenny Westbrook; great-grandchildren, Chloe "Precious Angel" and Caden "Wild Man;" and wonderful nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Edward "Jark" Cox; a brother, Fred Hood, and grandson, Justin Keith Westbrook.
The family would like to thank the staff at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center, the wonderful Kitty Askins staff, Pastor Patrick Muston, and Helen's many friends for their care and loving support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Helen's memory to Selah Christian Church, 1332 Selah Church Road, Four Oaks, NC 27524; or the charity of one's choice.
Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro is serving the family and online condolences may be sent through www.shumate-faulk.com.
