ELIZABETH WILLIAMS MATHIS

Elizabeth Williams Mathis, daughter of the late Leroy and Daisy Wilson Williams, passed away Jan. 27, 2011.
She was born July 20, 1930, and reared in Goldsboro, N.C. Elizabeth, "Liz," as she was affectionately called, was educated in Goldsboro City schools.
Upon graduating with honors from Dillard High School, she continued her education at Hampton Institute, now Hampton University.
Deaconess Mathis was a life member of First African Baptist Church. She served faithfully in many ministries of her church -- church secretary for 28 years, retiring in 1996; Sunday school teacher; youth supervisor; missionary circle; several committees; and the deaconess ministry.
Deaconess Elizabeth and her husband, the late Deacon John "Mack" Manly Mathis, worked diligently in the mission field until his illness and death.
Elizabeth Williams Mathis, better known to her friends and family as "Liz" and by her pastor as "Queen Elizabeth," was truly a Christian lady, who nurtured and cared for many children, both in her family and those not related by blood.
During her tenure as director of the youth missionary ministry, (formerly the missionary circle), the children loved her and enjoyed coming Monday afternoons to study God's word, and learn what it meant to be a Christian.
The funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. with a viewing at 2 p.m. Saturday at First African Baptist Church. Interment will take place at Wayne Memorial Park North.
She is survived by a sister, Estelle W. Thorpe of Hamden, Conn.; four brothers, Richard Williams of White Plains, N.Y., Delindwood Williams (Esther) of Philadelphia, Pa., Clarence G. Williams (Mildred) of Durham, N.C., and Ralph N. Williams (Anita) of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters-in-law, Mary Williams of Bridgeport, Conn., Carol Williams of Detroit, Mich., Bettie Williams of Durham, N.C., and Shirley Williams of New Haven, Conn.; many nieces and nephews; and a loving church family.
Services of compassion and distinguished class are rendered by E.M. Matthews Funeral Home.
