He was both trustee and bus driver for Holly Hill Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in which he grew up, and was a longtime member, carrying on a long family tradition.
He leaves a legacy of loved ones to cherish his memories. They include his daughters, Deborah Melinda (Elvin) Exum of LaGrange, N.C., Robin Inez (Carl) Andrews of Whiteville, N.C., and Bobbette Elise Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; son, George William (Jill) Smith Jr., of Mount Olive, N.C.; a brother, Leonard (Christine) Smith of LaGrange, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Esther (Herman) Lewis of Washington, D.C., and Rossie Bell and Barbara Best both of Goldsboro, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Eddie B. It was Monday evening that Mr. Smith received his final destination from the chief dispatcher, the Heavenly Father, and was told "breaker breaker one nine, thy good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, come on up, I'm now going to make you ruler over many ... over and out."
Services of compassion and distinguished class are rendered by E.M. Matthews Funeral Home.
