In profound sorrow, the president and staff at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home & Cremation Inc. join in with the McKenzie family to announce the passing of Emma Greene McKenzie, 4012 U.S. 70 East. Wednesday at 8:20 a.m., Emma McKenzie departed this life at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Celebration of life services honoring Mrs. McKenzie's life and legacy will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1065 Tommy's Road in Goldsboro. Second vice moderator and pastor, the Rev. Joe Jackson, will provide words of comfort.
Following the services in the sanctuary, the E.M. Matthews classic angelic white fleet will escort Mrs. McKenzie's earthly temple, along with her precious family, to Coom's Cemetery for committal rites. While those whom she loved will inter her physical tabernacle, God the heavenly father, as the head architect, and his precious son, Jesus, as the general contractor, passed the final inspection and granted Mrs. McKenzie the certificate of occupancy to her spiritual mansion in glory.
She was born in Wayne County Jan. 27, 1919, to the late Deacon Junius and Charity Coor Greene.
She graduated from Central High School in 1939.
Sister McKenzie was united in holy matrimony to the late Albert Croom. She later married the late Nathaniel McKenzie and resided in Grand Rapids, Mich., for 30 years.
Sister McKenzie joined Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church more than 70 years ago under the leadership of the late Rev. Bullock. She served on the usher board and various auxiliaries.
While residing in Michigan, she was affiliated with True Light Baptist Church.
Sister McKenzie enjoyed reading the Bible daily.
Also, she was instrumental in getting seniors and young adults to register and vote for President Barack Obama. Sister McKenzie could quote almost anything dealing with politics. She received a plaque and dinner at the Royal Tea Room for her efforts from her nephew, James Robert Hinnant, who organized the drive.
She is survived by her son, Elwood (Shirley) Croom of Goldsboro; grandson, Eric (April) Croom of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a sister, Ethel G. Rodger of Goldsboro; two goddaughters, Grace (Napoleon) Bell and Ernice (William) Hobbs, both of Goldsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation for Mrs. Emma McKenzie will be held at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremations Inc. Friday from 2 to 8 p.m.
