REV. HOBART W. BURNSIDE JR.

SMITHFIELD -- The Rev. H. W. Burnside "Hobie", 74, passed away Monday at Britthaven Nursing Home.
Funeral service will be held at Fellowship United Methodist Church, 5755 Raines Crossroads Road in Princeton, Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Hobie was born in Fairmont W.Va., where he began his ministry.
Rev. Burnside received his license to preach in 1956 and served in the W.Va., United Methodist Conference for seven years.
Hobie moved to Smithfield in 1964, where he served at Wesley Heights and Asbury United Methodist Churches. He served several churches in eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks.
Hobie continued his education at Pembroke State University, graduating in 1971, and then graduated from Duke University, where he received his Masters of Divinity in 1976.
Hobie retired after 50 years of preaching. His last appointment brought him back to Johnston County, serving Fellowship and Micro United Methodist churches.
Hobie and Mary Jane retired and remained members of Fellowship United Methodist church. Hobie was known for his preaching and bible studies. He loved to show his slides of the Holy Land. He went on two work missions to Jamaica.
He enjoyed fishing in his younger years. He also enjoyed painting, reading and doing puzzles. He and Mary Jane enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Hobie is survived by his wife of 561/2 years, Mary Jane Burnside; four children; Shirley McLeod of Wilmington, John E. Burnside of Clinton, Sue Thornton of Raleigh and Cindy Justice of Clinton; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart W. Burnside Sr. and Eloise S. Burnside.
The family would like to thank all the medical staff at Britthaven Nursing Home and Johnston Memorial Hospital for their loving care. We would also like to thank our friends for their prayers, love and support in our time of need.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Casey Funeral Home, 105 E. First St. in Princeton.
