VERNON R. HAWLEY

PIKEVILLE -- Vernon Ray "Rooster" Hawley, 70, went to be with his Lord early Tuesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be held tonight at 7 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Merrill Davis officiating. Interment will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Rooster was born in Wilson County Jan. 17, 1939, to the late Vernon Hawley and Dollie Outland Hawley.
He had worked with the North Carolina Forestry Service at the Claridge State Forest Nursery for 3712 years.
Rooster was a member of Pikes Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served faithfully as a greeter.
He will be remembered as a caring, compassionate man and loyal friend to so many. The love in Rooster's life was God, family and friends. He will be missed by many.
Rooster is survived by his wife of more than 48 years, Jean Hinton Hawley; his son, Steve Hawley and wife, Carla, of Selma; his daughter, Lisa Nichols and husband, Dwayne, of Pikeville; his grandchildren, Jonathan Nichols, Kristen Nichols, Zachary Hawley and Jacob Hawley; his sister, Brenda Sue Page of Wilson; and his brothers, Jerry Hawley of Goldsboro, Bobby Hawley of Middlesex, Kenneth Hawley of Middlesex, Ronnie Hawley of Kenly and Jimmy Hawley of Kenly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Gray, and his brothers, Donnie Hawley and Connie Hawley.
The family will receive friends tonight following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at 179 E. Taylor Road in Pikeville.
