Kathleen Thigpen Garris, 82, went to be with her Heavenly Father Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.
A service to remember Kathleen will be held tonight at 7 at New Hope Friends Meeting, with Bill Garner officiating. Interment will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in New Hope Friends Church Cemetery.
Kathleen was born in Wayne County Feb. 28, 1927, to the late Willie Thigpen and Ethel Smith Thigpen.
She retired from the Wayne County Public Schools after 23 years of service, serving both New Hope and Eastern Wayne Schools as cafeteria manager.
Kathleen was an active member of New Hope Friends Meeting.
She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother "Nonnie" and a wonderful friend to so many.
Kathleen is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Joseph "Jack" Garris; her daughters, Betty Jo Hare of Goldsboro, Karon G. Anderson of Emerald Isle and Elaine G. Edwards and husband, Virgil, of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Chris Boyette, Angie Joyner, Burney Shirley and wife, Maile, Benji Shirley, Dr. Justin Edwards and Shelley Edwards; and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Boyette, Al Joyner, Kaden Shirley and Addie Shirley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to New Hope Friends Meeting, 4451 E. US 70, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church and other times at her home.
