DR. GEORGE EDWARD MAYO III

Dr. George Edward Mayo III, 72, passed away on Saturday morning at his home surrounded by his family.
A service to celebrate George's life will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. James H. Harry officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont with Full Military Honors.
George was born in Fremont on May 21, 1937, to the late George Edward Mayo Jr. and Susie Mae Whitley Bogue. He was a graduate of both the Dental School and the Pediatric Dentistry Program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. George was also a graduate of the Orthodontics Program at Georgetown University. He was board certified in Orthodontics and was selected to be a member of the International College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentistry. George had retired as colonel from the United States Air Force and had served his country during Desert Storm.
As an active member of the Goldsboro community, George served on the Board of Wayne Memorial Hospital and was a member of the WATCH committee. He was also a member of the Wayne County Dental Society, the Goldsboro Rotary Club and the Goldsboro Elks Lodge. He was a long-time member of the family table at Wilber's.
George will be remembered for dedicating his life to his family, dentistry, and the Carolina Tarheels.
George is survived by his wife, Rebecca Cole Mayo; his children, Margaret-Ann McIntosh Mayo, George Edward Mayo IV and Mary Virginia Mayo; his brother, David Whitley Mayo of Wrightsville Beach; and his sister, Mary Sue Beamon of Tarboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, NC 27530, or to the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514-0309.
The family will receive friends today from 7 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
