CANARY L. STRICKLAND
Sept. 25, 1908-Nov. 1, 2009
Canary Langston Strickland, 101, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and inspiration to all who knew her, died peacefully Sunday at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro, with the Rev. Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Willow Dale Cemetery.
Canary was born Sept. 25, 1908, to Kirby and Emma Benson Langston. She was the younger of two daughters.
Since she was a child, Canary has attended the First Pentecostal Church in Goldsboro, and continued for as long as she was able. She loved God and her church family and, when possible, she was in the house of the Lord on Sunday.
Jan. 10, 1925, Canary Langston became the bride of David W. Strickland Jr. This marriage spanned beyond 50 years. From their union, seven children were born.
Canary was a great teacher.
She was completely selfless and always willing to drop what she was doing to help others. Her wisdom and devotion to her family, friends and community will never be forgotten.
Above all, she had tremendous love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will always be grateful for the time they had to spend with her and will try to live up to her example.
She is survived by stepdaughter, Mildred Gaul of Laurenville, Ga.; daughters, Edna S. and Mike Fink of Hampton, Va., Peggy S. and Harold Little of Mooresville and Jean S. and David Anderson of Garner; sons, David W. Strickland III and wife, Sarah, of Newport News, Va. and Glenn R. Strickland of Clayton; a special grandson, Steve Strickland of Pikeville; 33 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and 54 great-great-grandchildren. How wonderful to be so blessed.
The gates of Heaven opened wide and there to welcome Canary to her heavenly home were family members who had gone before, including her mother and father, Kirby and Emma Benson Langston; her sister, Corina O'Steen; her husband, David W. Strickland Jr.; her daughters, Julia Strickland Carraway and Hellon Strickland; and her stepson, Osbourn Strickland. What a joyful reunion that must have been.
The family will receive friends at noon at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
