SOUTHPORT -- Daniel Hugh Matthews Jr., 82, died Friday afternoon at J. Arthur Dosher Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro with the family receiving friends from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. prior to the funeral service. The Rev. Charlie Carter will officiate. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.
He was born in Harnett County to the late Daniel H. and Girlie Hawley Matthews and was married to the late Olivia Shumate Matthews. He was married to the love of his life, Olivia Shumate Matthews, for 57 years, until her passing on Aug. 26, 2009. His career began with the Atlantic Coastline Railway and progressed to Allied Security Life Insurance Company, retiring as Executive Vice President with United Family Life Insurance Co. in Atlanta, Ga. He was owner and operator of Burger World in Goldsboro during his retirement years. A member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island, he was a former member of Love Memorial Baptist Church of Goldsboro and a charter member of Madison Ave. Baptist Church of Goldsboro. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
He loved spending time with his family and is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen M. and Donnie Lizotte of Wake Forest and Mollie M. and F.E. McKee of Cornelius; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Nancy Matthews of Charlotte; two brothers-in-law, Ed Shumate and Charles Shumate, both of Goldsboro; he cherished his time with his four grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris), Jonathan, Mac and Colton; and his two great-grandchildren, Cody and Nicole. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ludie Mae M. Matthews, and two brothers, Seba Matthews and Ulysses Matthews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to First Baptist Church, 4608 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465-5212.
