Jane G. Stephens passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Aug. 13, after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Jane was born on Aug. 13, 1946, the daughter of James Cochran Geddie and Mildred Russell Geddie. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, as well as her husband, Kedius "Sam" Stephens and her sister, Becky G. Rowe.
She married Kedius "Sam" Stephens in 1965 and they resided in Raleigh, N.C. She had two children, Darrin Parker Stephens and Sherry Lynn Stephens. She was widowed in 1987. In 1997 she met her life partner Jose Alvear and they moved to Myrtle Beach to share their lives together in 2002.
Jane began her career with First Union Bank in 1974 in the commercial loan department before moving to the retail side of the bank as a customer service representative in the Garner office. In 1984, she was promoted to branch manager of the Garner branch in the community where she lived. Jane was "First Union" to her many loyal customers.
In 1986, she became branch manager at North Hills and later moved to the Crabtree Valley branch as manager. Jane was promoted to the position of retail credit sales consultant working with branch managers and new lenders to meet the credit needs of customers. She stayed in this role until retirement in 2006. She enjoyed her career of 32 years at First Union/Wachovia and met many of her lifelong friends while working there.
She is survived by her partner, Jose Alvear; her son, Darrin Parker Stephens and daughter-in-law, Debbie Grantham Stephens, and their two children Blake and Brianna Stephens; her daughter, Sherry Stephens Connor and son in-law Dr. Bill Connor, and Sherry's daughter Shannon Jane Bradley. Also surviving are her brother, James "Jim" C. Geddie of Raleigh; her niece, Cheryl Rowe Parker and husband Robert Parker and their children, Alex and Sam of California; her niece, Tracy Jane Comer and husband Allen Comer of Wisconsin. In addition, she is remembered by a large number of lifelong friends and extended family who all meant so much to her.
Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 17, 2009, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1201 Maxwell Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27603 at 11 am. The family will receive guests immediately following at the celebration of life reception in the fellowship hall.
