JESSE SPEIGHT OAKES
March 19, 1930-May 14, 2009
SNOW HILL -- Mr. Jesse Speight Oakes, born March 19, 1930, went to be with his Lord Thursday, after a prolonged illness. He died at his home surrounded by his wife and children.
A native of Greene County, he was born and raised in Hookerton, the son of the late Arthur Courts and Effie Stocks Oakes. He graduated from Hookerton High School in 1948. He and his wife, Joyce, married in 1980 and resided at Shines Crossroads for the remainder of his life.
Jesse was a farmer and a carpenter, owner of Oakes Builders, and owner and operator of Oakes Family Farms and Nahunta Farms. He received the greatest pleasure by meeting with his friends at Beaman's Restaurant at 4:30 a.m. each morning.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Heath officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.
In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur Courts Oakes Jr., Raymond "Tedock" Oakes, Bennie Earl Oakes, Bill Oakes, Carroll Oakes, and James Oakes; sisters, Mattie Erma Askew, Betsy Laughinghouse, Elizabeth Harrison, and Inez Gurganus; and grandchildren, Krista Leigh and Jessica Nicole Robbins.
His surviving family includes his loving wife of 28 years, Joyce Stroud Chapman Oakes, who stood by his side providing love and support; his eight children, Irma Oakes Corbett and husband, Allen, Kay Oakes Boykin and husband, Dennis, Sue Oakes Taylor and husband, Johnny, Bobbie Oakes Harrell and significant other, George Res, Jesse Oakes Jr. and wife, Deb, Pam Oakes Holloman and husband, Steve, Pam Chapman Robbins and husband, Ty, and Charles Chapman and wife, Susan; sisters, Bell Boyles and Mildred West; mother-in-law, Lillian Stroud; grandchildren, Kim Henning and husband, Mark, Hope Vick and husband, Stan, Woody Corbett and wife, Evelyn, Ted Sauls Jr., and wife, Paula, Lindsey Brown and husband, Corey, Joe Boykin and wife, Shiori, Jenny Boykin, John Harrell and wife, Emma, Trey Taylor and wife, Tracy, Jesse Taylor, Russ and Ryan Kornegay, Stephanie, Reagan and Morgan Holloman, Trey and Chelsea Robbins and Danielle Chapman; and great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Luke Corbett, Jordan Barrow, Taylor and Kaylee Vick, Kennedy and Hailey Sauls, Riley Grace Brown and Chloe Herring.
Jesse also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews, breakfast partners and his "partner in crime," Morris Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church and other times at the residence, 1783 Gurganus Road, Snow Hill.
