DUDLEY -- Deaconess Mary Elizabeth B. Booker Spencer, 87, 2900 Old Mount Olive Highway, departed her earthly life Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at noon at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, 101 Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, with the Rev. Angelene Thomas, officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery.
Prior to the funeral service, a wake will be held Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, 101 Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, with the family present to receive other family members and friends.
Mary was born in Wayne County on Nov. 11, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Bryant and Daisy Sutton Bryant.
Mary's mother died at an early age and her stepmother, Louvenia Williams Bryant, served as her caretaker.
She was educated in the Wayne County school system.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age and she was united with St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in 1937. Mary was dependable and she helped with various projects at the church.
Mary met and married the love of her life, the late Lionel Spencer, while he was serving in World War II.
Deaconess Spencer is survived by her son, Oscar Spencer and wife, Diania, of Rex; two daughters, Leatha McPhual and husband, Harrison, and Dorothy Darden, all of Washington, D.C.; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dean Bass and husband, Richard, of Durham; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; a special cousin, Lou Etta Ford of Warsaw; two dear, dear friends, Alrica Bingham of the home and Bill Wheeler of Goldsboro.
A viewing will be held Tuesday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, from 1 to 5 p.m.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 2900 Old Mount Olive Highway, Dudley.
