AMOS J. JOHNSON

MOUNT OLIVE -- Amos James Johnson Jr., 71, of 714 Club Knolls Road, died Friday at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, and will be officiated by the Rev. Don Matthis. Burial will follow at Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery, Magnolia. The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and at the residence at other times.
The Sampson County native was retired from Johns-Manville Company in Laurinburg where he was project engineer and cost accountant. Among the places he had lived include Faison, Wagram, Laurin-burg, the Magnolia area and in his later years, Mount Olive, where he was a past member of the Mount Olive Rotary Club. He was known for his craftsmanship in making cabinets and other wood items, which was more of a hobby than an occupation. He had been an active Jaycee member in past years and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church near Magnolia.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Powell Johnson of the home; three sons, Amos James "Jay" Johnson III and wife, Karen, of Jacksonville, Fla., Edward "Eddie" Spencer Johnson of Wilmington, and Brian Keith Johnson of Asheville; two grandchildren, Amos James "A.J." Johnson IV and Susannah Johnson, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Wilda Fay Matthis and husband, Luvy, of Goldsboro; nephews, Alan Matthis of LaGrange, Todd Raynor of Raleigh, Brandon Raynor of Fayetteville, Jon Welch of Mount Olive, and Christopher Welch of Loganville, Ga.; several special long-time friends including Ed Bradshaw, Elwood and Bobbie Allen, and Bill and Ann Lewis, all of Faison; and his beloved canine companion, Mitch.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa "Teri" Stephenson, and his parents, Amos James Johnson and Estelle Merritt Johnson.
