JAMES R. BENDER
Died March 12, 2009
James Richards Bender, 81, died Thursday at his home surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral will be held tonight at 7 at Salem United Methodist Church followed by visitation. Interment will be for and at the convenience of the family at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mr. Bender proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Korea. He was a longtime member of the Goldsboro Civitans. He was retired from Pine State Creamery and had operated Bender's Barn in the Belfast community. While living in Fremont he was instrumental in the development of the Daffodil Park, and was the life of Bender's Fremont Hardware, where everyone loved Mr. "B."
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Bailey Bender and Rosa Richards Bender Bryant; brother, John Bender; sister, Mary Wells; daughter-in-law, Carol Peele Bender.
Mr. Bender is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Julia Winstead Bender; daughters and sons-in-laws, Connie and Mike Hopper of Goldsboro and Cynthia and Jerry Tucker of Wilson; son, Jim Bender of Goldsboro; grandsons, Richie Bender, Chris Griffin and wife, Ashley, and Chris Hopper; great-granddaughters, Skylar Griffin and Tanner Griffin; sister, Hazel Williams of Clinton; and his special companion, his dog, "Trouble."
