EDITE T. VITOLS

NEW BERN -- Born in 1922 in Riga, Latvia, Edite Timermanis Vitols left Latvia in 1941 during the final Soviet World War II invasion. Following the end of the war, she immigrated with her husband, mother and father to North Carolina in 1949.
With medical degrees from both Hamburg University in Germany and Duke Uni-
versity, North Carolina, Dr. Edith, as she was known by her friends and co-workers, first worked at the state hospital in Butner, then as a general practitioner in Newton Grove, and joined Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro as clinical director in 1958. In the late 1960s she and her family moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she completed her residency in psychiatry. While
in Richmond she worked
with the Medical College
of Virginia, Virginia Com-monwealth University and the federal drug rehabili-tation program Human Resources Inc. She returned to Goldsboro and Cherry Hospital in 1982 as a unit director until her retirement in 1999.
Her greatest joy was her profession and helping people through her skill as a physician. She enjoyed the ocean, travel, dancing, bird watching, rescuing stray dogs and reading.
She is survived by her daughter, Sondra E. Vitols, a resident of New York City and her son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Kathryn Vitols of New Bern.
Memorial services will be held at Seymour Funeral Home, 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Humane Society, your local animal shelter or the World Wildlife Fund.
