DUDLEY -- Annie Rose Smith Lane, 73, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. A dedicated servant of God, she now resides with Him in Heaven. Mrs. Lane was the widow of Anthony Ganes "Goat" Lane, who preceded her in death earlier this year.

She was born to William Henry and Leona Baker Smith, who were from Pikeville. When she was just 11 days old, she was preceded in death by her mother. At 6 months of age, her father united with Mabel Best Smith who became her mother until she, too, departed in 2003. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin Lee Smith, Lonnie Brantley "L.B." Smith and Carl William "Tarp" Smith; three sisters, Helene Smith, Mamie Ruth Smith, and Daisy "Polly" Leona Smith; a niece, Donna Kay Smith; and two nephews, Kenneth Wade Smith and Robert Earl Owens.

She is survived by her son, Anthony "Tony" Lane and his wife, Tracy Grimes-Lane, of Mount Olive. She also leaves behind three grandsons, Kaleb M. Lane, Tommy Thompson and Drake Thompson of Mount Olive. Other survivors include three sisters, Gladys Smith Tilton of Goldsboro, Dorothy Smith Jones Best of Pikeville and Aver Smith Olson and husband, Robert, of Hope Mills; two brothers, Johnny Ray Smith and wife, Nellie, of Mount Olive and George Wade Smith and his wife, Ader, of Pikeville; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ. Of those who should be noted are special nieces, Cristy Goodwin and Tammy Strickland.

After graduating from Eureka High School in Eureka, Mrs. Lane took employment with W.T. Grant's Department Store in Goldsboro and worked there until the store closed several years later, after which she became a homemaker and mother to many. She served numerous families of the area as a sitter for their small ones. She was a long-time member of Goldsboro Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, where in her years as a member, she served with the ladies auxiliary and the church choir.

In addition to church activities, she enjoyed her grandchildren, pets, eating good food, and shopping. Special friends that will surely miss her are Bear, Plug and Bigfoot.

Visitation was Saturday night at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will receive at the home of her son, Tony Lane, 206 Tar Heel Drive, Mount Olive.

The funeral will be held today at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with entombment following at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.
