NADINE W. HOWELL

Nov. 1,1919 - Nov. 24, 2006

Nadine West Howell, wife, to D. Edward Howell and mother to sons, D. Edward Howell Jr. of Raleigh, and David J. Howell of San Francisco, Calif., slipped easily into Heaven on Friday, November 24. In addition to her sons, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Josey Howell; grandchildren, Parrysh Howell Duva of Boca Raton, Fla. (husband Craig), Frederick Howell (wife Kristen, great grandchildren Taylor, Summer, Steven and Spencer) of Holly Springs, Tiffani Howell of Durham and Alix Howell of Willow Spring, and by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Magdaline West of Durham. In addition, survivors include a niece and spouse, Betty Jane Torow of Jensen Beach, Fla., as well as nephews and spouses, Sam and Kathy West of Elizabeth City and Mark and Laura West of Tampa, Fla. In keeping with Nadine's firm wishes that her interment be kept simple and without fanfare, private graveside services for the family were held shortly after her death.

Nadine was a citizen of Goldsboro for more than 60 years and, as such, a familiar face to the church, school and volunteer community. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church since her early 20s and a regular participant in the Dorcas Sunday School class there. Three decades of graduates of Goldsboro High School (1950s through 1970s) are likely to recall her welcoming face in the administrative office, where she served as assistant to the principal. She was less well-known, perhaps, but no less recognized nor appreciated by the dinner guests at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, whom she served for many years following her retirement and the death of her husband Ed in 1976.

Throughout her lifetime, Nadine was blessed with a generous spirit, as well as with a physically strong body well into her 80s. Several years ago, her failing mental faculties led to her relocation to an assisted living environment in Raleigh. The family sincerely appreciates all of the expressions of kindness shown to Nadine throughout the years. Her sons request that friends of their mother honor her memory through whatever charitable endeavors they feel appropriate. We can think of nothing that would please her more. Rest in peace, Mom.
