COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. - Dr. Oscar R. Williams Jr., 16313 Happy Hill Road, died Friday. He was born to Elouise Hobbs Williams and the late Oscar R. Williams Sr.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg, with the Rev. Ora Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.
He received his early education in the Goldsboro Public Schools. After graduating from Dillard High School in 1955 he served in the U. S. Army. After his discharge he enrolled at N. C. Central University, where he earned both his Bachelor and Master Degrees in History. He went on to further his studies receiving his Ph.D. in History from Ohio State University. He was a published author, public speaker, historian and received numerous awards and accolades.
He attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church as a child and young adult and later became a member of Gillfield Baptist Church where he attended faithfully and enjoyed singing with the men's ensemble.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marjorie M. Williams; a son, Oscar R. Williams, III, and wife, Stephanie; two daughters, Teresa Williams Hicks and husband, Leonard, and Iris Williams-Kareem and husband, Gamal; three grandchildren; Kristina and Nathaniel Hicks, and Anwar Kareem; one brother, Lawrence D. Williams; three sisters, Deloris W. Jackson, Fannie E. Williams, and Annette W. Brown, and many other relatives and friends; also left to cherish his memory is his mother, Elouise Hobbs Williams.
